DESCRIPTION:Moving People Safely in Domiciliary Care\nMoving people safely in domiciliary care requires practical skills\, careful planning and a person centred approach. \nThis six hour face to face course helps care workers support people with mobility\, transfers and repositioning. It also shows learners how to protect dignity\, independence and safety while working in a person’s own home. \nEvery home environment is different. Staff may encounter restricted space\, unsuitable furniture\, clutter\, pets or equipment that has been moved or stored incorrectly. A person’s strength\, balance or mobility may also change between visits. Therefore\, care workers need to assess each situation before providing support. \nThis practical course develops the knowledge\, confidence and skills needed to move and assist people safely. \nWho is this course for?\nThe course is suitable for domiciliary care workers\, home care workers\, personal assistants\, support workers and community care staff. \nIt is also suitable for new employees who require practical moving and handling training\, as well as experienced staff who need to refresh or develop their skills. \nNo previous moving and handling qualification is required. \nWhat does the course cover?\nLearners will explore their responsibilities when moving and assisting people. They will consider the risks linked to unsafe practice and learn how safer movement principles can reduce the chance of injury. \nThe course also covers communication\, consent\, dignity\, choice and independence. Learners will discuss how to encourage people to use their own abilities wherever it is safe to do so. \nRisk assessment is included throughout the day. Learners will look at individual care plans\, moving and handling assessments\, equipment requirements and changes that may make a planned movement unsafe. \nPractical topics include sitting\, standing\, transferring\, repositioning\, bed mobility and chair repositioning. Learners will also explore the use of slide sheets\, transfer aids\, mobility equipment\, hoists and slings where appropriate. \nFalls awareness\, equipment checks\, incident reporting and knowing when to stop and seek advice are also included. \nPractical moving and handling training\nThis is an interactive course. Learners will take part in demonstrations\, guided practice and realistic domiciliary care scenarios. \nPractical activities may include supporting a person from sitting to standing\, helping someone sit safely\, repositioning in a chair or bed and using slide sheets or transfer aids. \nLearners may also practise preparing the environment\, checking equipment and responding to unexpected changes during a home visit. \nThe exact equipment used may depend on the needs of the learner group. However\, staff must always follow the person’s current care plan\, risk assessment and agreed moving and handling procedure. \nMoving people safely in a person’s home\nDomiciliary care can present challenges that are not normally found in a residential care setting. \nWorkers may find limited space around beds and chairs\, low sofas\, unsuitable furniture\, clutter\, pets or uneven flooring. Relatives and visitors may also be present during the task. \nIn some cases\, furniture may have been moved since the last visit. Equipment may be missing\, damaged or stored incorrectly. A second care worker may also be unavailable. \nBecause of this\, workers should check the person\, the environment and the equipment before starting. \nLearners will discuss when it is safe to continue. They will also learn when to stop\, report a concern or request a new assessment. \nPerson centred moving and handling\nSafe moving and handling is not only about technique. \nWorkers should explain what is going to happen and involve the person throughout the movement. Where possible\, the person should be encouraged to take part and use their own abilities. \nThis approach supports dignity\, confidence\, independence\, comfort and choice. \nLearners will also explore how pain\, fear\, tiredness or illness may affect a person’s ability to move safely. \nRisk assessments and care plans\nBefore supporting a person\, staff should check the current moving and handling plan. \nThe plan should explain what the person can do\, what support they need and which equipment should be used. It may also state how many workers are required and which techniques have been assessed as suitable. \nHowever\, a written plan does not replace an immediate safety check. \nWorkers should pause if the person appears weaker\, unwell\, frightened or unable to follow the planned movement. They should also stop if equipment is missing\, damaged or unsuitable. \nEquipment safety\nLearners will explore the safe use of equipment that may be found in domiciliary care. \nThis may include slide sheets\, transfer boards\, turntables\, handling belts\, standing aids\, mobile hoists\, slings and mobility aids. \nThe course also covers basic pre-use checks and the importance of using the correct equipment for the person. \nWorkers should not use equipment that is damaged\, unsuitable or different from the equipment listed in the care plan. Any defect or concern should be reported promptly. \nHoists and slings\nWhere relevant\, learners will explore different types of hoist and sling. \nThe course will consider sling identification\, attachment points\, safe working loads\, compatibility\, positioning and pre-use checks. \nLearners will also discuss communication\, reassurance and signs that equipment may be damaged or unsuitable. \nHoists and slings should only be used when they are suitable for the person and included within the assessed moving and handling plan. \nFalls and the fallen person\nThe course also considers what staff should do if a person falls or is found on the floor. \nLearners will explore immediate safety\, checking the person\, calling for suitable help and avoiding unsafe lifting. \nThey will also discuss following the person’s falls plan\, reporting the incident and seeking medical advice where required. \nWorkers should never attempt an unsafe manual lift simply because a person wants to get up quickly. \nWhat will learners achieve?\nBy the end of the course\, learners should understand their moving and handling responsibilities and be able to identify common risks within domiciliary care. \nThey should be able to follow a moving and handling plan\, prepare the person and environment\, check equipment and apply safer movement principles. \nLearners should also be able to recognise unsafe situations\, respond to changes in mobility and know when to stop and seek further advice. \nAssessment\nLearners are assessed throughout the course through trainer questions\, discussion\, practical activities and realistic domiciliary care scenarios. \nPractical skills will be observed during the session. Learners must demonstrate safe practice to complete the course successfully. \nCertificate\nSuccessful learners will receive a Moving People Safely in Domiciliary Care certificate. \nAnnual refresher training is recommended. As a result\, you will have opportunities to develop your technique\, ask questions and receive supportive feedback from your trainer. \nBlended paediatric first aid training\nYou must complete the online learning before attending the practical session on Thursday 27 August 2026. \nThe face-to-face training takes place from 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Training in Partnership Training Hub in Andover. During the session\, your trainer will guide you through practical demonstrations\, skills practice and assessment activities. \nAssessment takes place through practical observation and appropriate knowledge checks. Therefore\, learners must successfully complete both parts of the blended course to receive the qualification. \nQualification and certification\nAfter successfully completing the course and its assessments\, you will receive the QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF). The certificate is valid for three years. \nPaediatric first aid training should be renewed before the certificate expires.
