The programme is suitable for new or aspiring workplace trainers, internal trainers, training coordinators, managers, supervisors, team leaders, clinical and care staff and subject specialists. It can support people who deliver staff inductions, refresher training, practical demonstrations, toolbox talks or other workplace learning. No previous training qualification is required. However, anyone intending to teach a specialist subject must already hold suitable subject knowledge, occupational experience and competence.

What will the course cover?

The core programme covers the role and responsibilities of a workplace trainer; adult learning principles; recognising learner needs and barriers; inclusive training practice; establishing training needs; writing clear aims and measurable learning outcomes; using Bloom’s Taxonomy; producing structured lesson and session plans; choosing appropriate delivery methods, activities and resources; communication and questioning techniques; managing participation and group dynamics; formal and informal assessment methods; constructive feedback; evaluation; reflective practice; and preparation for the assessed training delivery.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme, learners will be able to explain the role and responsibilities of a workplace trainer; apply adult learning principles; recognise factors that affect participation and learning; identify learner and organisational needs; write clear aims and measurable outcomes; produce a structured lesson or session plan; select inclusive delivery methods and resources; use effective communication and questioning; assess knowledge and practical competence; provide constructive feedback; deliver a planned workplace training session; and evaluate their own delivery and development needs.

Practical assessment and certification

Approximately two weeks after the two full teaching days, learners return for an additional half-day assessment. Each learner submits a completed lesson or session plan and delivers a planned short training session. The assessment considers preparation, structure, communication, learner engagement, use of appropriate methods and resources, assessment of learning, feedback and reflective evaluation. A Training in Partnership Train the Trainer certificate is issued after all core requirements have been successfully completed. This is a workplace trainer development programme and is not an Ofqual regulated teaching qualification.

Optional Knowledge Units after the core programme

After completing the core programme, learners can develop their subject-specific delivery through optional one-day Knowledge Units in Medication, Safeguarding, Moving and Assisting, and Basic Life Support/First Aid. Each unit costs £195 per person and is booked, assessed and certificated separately. The units are not included in the £295 core ticket. Learners must have suitable occupational knowledge and competence in the subject they intend to teach. A complete bundle containing the core programme and all four units will also be available separately.
