Introduction to Care course

Our Introduction to Care course is a 4-day practical induction programme for people who are new to adult social care, returning to care after a break, or preparing to start work in a care role.

This workshop-style course helps learners build confidence, understand the expectations of working in care and develop practical knowledge before workplace induction, shadowing and employer competency sign-off.

The programme is based on the Care Certificate standards and supports employers to evidence structured induction, learning, supervision and competence development. It is suitable for care homes, domiciliary care providers, supported living services, agency staff and individuals preparing to enter the care sector.

This course does not replace the employer’s workplace induction, role-specific training, supervision or Care Certificate sign-off. Employers remain responsible for confirming workplace competence.

• Moving and assisting practical awareness and assessment
• Basic Life Support practical training and assessment
• Workplace readiness and next steps for employer sign-off

Course structure

Day 1: Care values, role awareness and person-centred practice

Learners explore what good care looks and feels like, the role of adult social care, care worker responsibilities, dignity, communication and inclusive practice.

Day 2: Duty of care, safeguarding, capacity and support needs

Learners focus on duty of care, professional boundaries, safeguarding, consent, mental capacity, mental health, dementia, learning disability and autism awareness.

Day 3: Safe practice, infection control, wellbeing and records

Learners cover health and safety, risk awareness, infection prevention and control, nutrition, hydration, recognising change, confidentiality and record keeping.

Day 4: Moving & Assisting, Basic Life Support and workplace readiness

Learners complete practical Moving & Assisting and Basic Life Support sessions, including practical observation and assessment. The day also includes a final integrated care scenario and workplace evidence planning.

Assessment and evidence

Learners will take part in group activities, scenario-based discussions, workbook tasks, end-of-day knowledge checks and practical observations.

This Introduction to Care course provides evidence of learning and participation. Workplace competence must still be assessed by the employer.

Important note for employers

This course is designed to support induction and Care Certificate evidence. It does not replace local workplace induction, employer policies and procedures, shadow shifts, supervision, role-specific competency assessment or final Care Certificate sign-off.

Employers should use the course as part of a wider induction and competence pathway.
