Who should attend this Emergency First Aid at Work course?
This qualification is designed for people who may need to act as an emergency first aider at work. It may be suitable for employees working in offices, shops, hospitality, care services, education, charities, community organisations and many other workplace settings.
Employers should complete a first aid needs assessment before deciding how many first aiders they require and which qualification is appropriate for their workplace.
You can use the Qualsafe First Aid Calculator to help identify your potential workplace first aid requirements. Further information is also available on the Health and Safety Executive’s first aid at work pages.
What will the Emergency First Aid at Work course cover?
During your Emergency First Aid at Work training, you will learn how to:
- Understand the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
- Assess an emergency incident safely
- Manage an unresponsive casualty
- Place a casualty into the recovery position
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, known as CPR
- Use an automated external defibrillator, known as an AED
- Recognise and respond to choking
- Provide first aid for seizures
- Recognise and manage shock
- Control external bleeding
- Treat wounds and minor injuries

The course combines essential knowledge with practical activities. Therefore, you will have opportunities to practise the skills you may need during a real workplace emergency.
How does the blended course work?
First, you will complete approximately 2.5 hours of online learning. This must be finished before attending the face-to-face training.
You will then attend a four-hour practical session at our Andover Training Hub. During this session, your trainer will demonstrate each skill clearly and give you time to practise.
In addition, you will be able to ask questions and discuss situations that relate to your workplace. This helps make the training relevant and supports you in developing the confidence to respond during an emergency.
You must successfully complete both parts of the course to achieve the qualification.
Assessment and Qualsafe certification
Your trainer will assess your first aid knowledge and practical skills during the course. You must take part in the required activities and demonstrate the practical skills safely.
After successful completion, you will receive the regulated Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF). The qualification is valid for three years. However, regular first aid updates can help you maintain your knowledge and confidence between formal qualifications.
You can read more about the qualification on the Qualsafe Awards website.
